Poker is not a game for the faint hearted
Posted at 03/17/2007 05 AM in Beginner Topics by The Greedy Gecko.
Poker is not a game for the faint hearted. If you want to win a poker match then you have to make sure that you have the guts to do so. You have to make sure that you know how to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. If you have a suited king and queen then you need to have the guts to raise the pot even before the flop. Sometimes, even if you are handed with a seven and a two that aren’t even suited, you’ll have to fight with it. As many would say, poker is fifty percent luck and fifty percent skill. As the wise would say, fortune favors the bold.

If you want to take advantage of the fifty percent luck then you have to be pretty bold to seize the chances when luck comes your way. If you play too safe in poker then you will end up losing. For example, if you have a ten and a jack that are suited, what would you do before the flop comes out? Will you raise the pot or will you simply call the big blind? These are matters that your only your guts can deal with. When the flop comes out, you see a queen and a king that are of the same suit as yours. What will you do? Are you going to be confident and raise the pot or are you simply going to call what everyone put in the pot? If you are a daring player then you will go all in even without the nine or the ace showing up. Are you going to take advantage of this opportunity? Are you going to go for it? If the flop comes out and a six shows up, what are you going to do? Are you simply going to call everyone’s bets or are you going to go all in?

Since there is only one card left to show up, what are the chances that a nine or an ace will show up? The chances are pretty slim. Your opponents may have a hit a pair or even a two pair already. Are you going to go all in or are you going to wait for the river card to show up? If you are the daring and gutsy kind of player then by all means, you will go all in even before the river card comes out. You are certainly going to feel the rush at this moment. If you want to scare everyone away even if you haven’t hit anything then the only way to do it is by guts, not by thinking. Go ahead, just do it and win!
