Know When to Fold Them
Posted at 06/25/2008 03 AM in Beginner Topics by The Greedy Gecko.
Poker isn't just a game of luck. For sure, you will have to play with the cards that you are dealt but if you know how to judge what to do with them you can greatly advance your playing skills. The expression "to fold them" means to quit, give up, in poker terminology and it is part of good strategy to know when to do so.

Where to learn the game

Putting some thought into your gaming doesn't have to be rocket science. When it comes to poker there are many places online to get some good advice. You don't even have to go to the library to take part of this vast sea of information. Not only can you find the specific information your are looking for by simply typing it into a search engine you can also join a forum that is all about poker. Joining a forum is probably the best thing to do as you will find the answers to your questions and you will receive them from people who are active gamblers. This way you will also be able to get relevant information as to where to play. There might be an especially attractive tournament going on that you could join or maybe a really good welcoming bonus for you to receive.

It is well worth to consider reading up on some strategy for poker for the one that wants to be a serious player. Even the layman will enjoy playing better by following some of the advice from the professionals. There are several forms of poker available online and the most popular seems to be the Texas Holdem version. This is also the kind you can see on television in the big international poker events. If you aren't familiar at all with poker you'll be glad to know that the Internet is full of detailed manuals including strategy for all versions available. In general it can be said that just like around your own kitchen table you will soon become aware of the players that you play against. Even though you can't see their faces you will know by their actions if they are strong or weak players. Observing your opponents is always a must if you want to beat them. Another thing that is a common mistake is to call with a weak holding when you are faced with a bet. Remember to keep your head cool and not to get carried away.

Keeping the right attitude

Many successful players will be able to tell you how it is that just when they were doing great they suddenly made a big loss. This is the way of gambling. You can never be sure that you will always do great no matter how skilled you are. Therefore it is a good thing to keep a low profile and your feet on the ground. As long as you are playing mostly for the fun you will be able to take losses better. If you are dealing with big money you might want to stop yourself every now and then and ask yourself if it isn't time for you to "fold them", leave the table, count your money and enjoy it.
