Online Poker Is Rigged... P.S. I’m A Moron
Posted at 12/04/2005 05:43:58 PM in Personal Rants by Sack.
This is what I like to call a frustration piece. That is where something finally gets on your nerves just enough that you have to vent it out. So in the fine words of Peter Griffin:

“You know what really grinds my gears?” All these people wasting valuable bits of cyberspace to post their hand history of maybe one to three hands that they lost in order to “prove” that online poker is rigged. First off, get a life. Second, let’s just think rationally about some things.

“They rig it to get more action on hands.” Wow, that makes sense, I mean of course! That increases the rake… how was I ever so blind??? Obviously it has nothing to do with the fact that on any given ten person table you may easily see as many as eight or nine players coming in to see the flop with any range of cards. Even with four or five people any flop is going to give at least a couple of folks some sort of hand or draw that they will fight tooth and nail to try and hit. But even more important than that is the fact that these sites make plenty as it is, either way. It’s not worth them risking an entire customer base over an extra few cents per hand by “rigging the deck”. Then the worst part of it is that some people post hand histories from tournaments to justify the action theory. Hello? They already got their money from the buy in, how you do in the tournament doesn’t make a difference after you sign up.

So then we get, “But what about house players and bots at the table?” As far as house players, the same thing applies about how they have too much to lose to risk that. It’s just not happening… period. There may be buddies colluding with each other, but every reputable site has steps to weed these out. But that is not the site itself cheating you. And bots? Those too are able to be detected… but personally I’d love to see a bot at the table. Any halfway decent player will pick up on obvious patterns and exploit them to his or her advantage… be the obvious pattern from a bot or a human.

“Look at this though, I lost to a 2 outer!” And??? So what? I’ve lost to plenty of ridiculous things before, and I’ve won plenty of hands where I was a horrible dog and sucked out. It’s poker, it’s gambling, it’s a fact of life. Just because something has an incredibly small chance of happening, doesn’t mean it has zero chance of happening. And it can happen several times in a row. A good player can overcome these swings and minimize the losses or take people off of crazy drawing hands. Yes, sometimes people will call anything with anything, but overall in the long haul the better player will win out. And as crazy as it sounds, a good player will still win even when the cards may not be coming their way all the time.

“You just don’t see this in live play.” Umm… yeah, you do. Live play and online play are almost two completely different games in my opinion, and the playing styles vary greatly in each on different levels. You may see bad beats more often online, but you see more hands and also see more players entering pots. Aces are great heads up, but when you slow play it and have 6 other hands against you, your chances greatly diminish. Runner-runner happens in live play too. Hell, it was either the WSOP or a WPT event this year a pot was won by a hand that had a 0.5% chance of winning after the flop. I didn’t see a “live play is rigged” thread after that one.

I could go on and on about this because frankly I’m sick of hearing people bitch and moan. But basically you should know this fact: If you play at any sort of reputable poker site, and you actually believe it is rigged, then odds are you probably suck. If nothing else you are an idiot for keeping your money in and playing on a site you don’t think is legit. If you can’t handle losing then find another game to play. If you love the game but just suck, then read a book, practice in micro limit tables, and work your way up until you can one day say, “oh, I guess it’s not rigged. I was just a really bad player before.” And if you can’t get better then just put your cards and chips in the basement beside your guitar, athletic equipment, jigsaw puzzle, and anything else you found wasn’t easy to you without work that you gave up on. But that shouldn’t happen because everyone is a winning poker player… just ask them. “And that’s what grinds my gears.”
