| After a slow start followed by a maddening downturn, my first week of jobless poker skyrocketed into a resounding success. I can only assume that the plea in my last post convinced the poker gods to take pity on me, as since then my cards have improved a skrillion-fold, my confidence has returned, and my bankroll is looking healthy. One problem I need to work on is my laziness. I don't think I put in a complete eight-hour day once last week, and only played 29.75 hours the entire week. The good news, however, is that I made enough money in that time to cover for the slacking, raking in $555.66 for the week for a solid average of $18.67/hr. I know I've only been at it for a week, but I'm really excited about my results. Assuming I continue to make a consistent profit (which I know is a major assumption), I think this can be a very feasible way to get through college when I go back in January.
I'm very relieved that I was able to turn things around this week. There were certainly a few times I was convinced I'd made a horrible decision by doing this, but things really picked up this weekend. In fact I was up less than $100 for the week until Friday. It's amazing how much crazier the games are on the weekends than the rest of the time. I made $183 over a fifteen-minute stretch a little after midnight Saturday. Then, thanks to an incredible run of cards, I made $157 in a half-hour period a little before midnight Sunday. I had AQ twice, flopping top pair and turning top two the first time, and the second time turning a straight. I also had AA, KK, and QQ, with all of them holding up. I didn't win monster pots every time, but it's amazing enough that they all won. On a crappier note, I still haven't told my parents I quit my job, and I'm pretty sure they won't be thrilled by that news. I had a conversation with my mom a while back about the possibility of quitting my job to do this, and she was surprisingly supportive in a “He's not really going to do it so I'll play along” way, but now I'm a little worried about how she'll react. I'm even more worried about my dad, because I've never really said anything to him about it, and I can only assume he'll think I'm throwing my life away. He knows I play, and he knows that I've won some, and he thinks that's cool, but springing this on him out of the blue could be a recipe for bad times. I guess I'll deal with it eventually, but I should probably get on that. Well, hopefully this week will be even better than last week. And if it isn't, at least I can escape into the wonderful world of college football. Wiggie wiggie@pokergreed.com |
