Sack's First Entry
Posted at 08/09/2005 02:54:48 PM in Other by Sack.
"Hi, my name is Sack and I'm a poker player...." I figure a quick easy introduction such as that is warranted as I sit here like a first day in rehab, wondering who or what I should be. I can share with the group that I am an important business man, a doctor, a lawyer, or anything I so choose. These people don't know me. I can become anything I wanted to provide the perception that somehow I am better than them. That I just wound up here as another person slain by addiction downing Phenobarbital to fend off DT's, but outside of these walls I am bigger. But that wasn't the case at all, nor is that what I did.

I can sit here and tell you that I am a hotshot young gun. That I was that guy that took a bad beat during the musical segment of "the nuts" on ESPN. Or maybe Phil Ivey took me out just before the final table on the WPT. I could have a heads up match scheduled later this year for Daniel's challenge. I might even be an author of a book you possibly have heard of. Again, none of this is true nor is it what I will do.

I'm nothing more or nothing less than an average guy who likes to play poker. And when I say "likes" that is possibly the biggest understatement I have ever made. The first time I played it hit me like that first big night chasing bud light with yager and tequila... I don't really remember a whole lot about it, but I know I liked it and I was hooked. And much like my thirst for the devil's brew took hold of my body and senses, so did my quest to master the game of hold 'em.

I'm not that big gun you see on TV from week to week for two reasons. #1 I'm not that good yet and #2 I'm poor. Now don't get me wrong, for what I've got to work with I think I do quite well for myself. Playing poker has filled that little gap between making rent on not making rent for the few months that I've been playing now. I can't afford to play high stakes cash games, I just don't have the bankroll to handle the ebb and flow of such a thing. I'm a tournament specialist, operating under the theory of losing small and winning big. Every time you add it up: down two, down two, up ten equals positive six. I use this to manage my bankroll as well as my chips during tournament play. (as I write this I just won a tournament fighting back from a short stack, and turning a very negative week into a wash just like that)!

Like you I'm sure when I'm on my game and the cards are hitting it is a thing of beauty to behold, feeling as if you could jump into a WSOP event and run through the tournament. You feel the cards, you see what's coming next. You can look into your opponent and know what he's holding, and know that if you bet just the right amount with your inferior hand that you can scare him off the pot. The chips keep coming and you know people don't want to play a pot against you. Also like you I have my down times where I wonder why I even bother to play at all. What made me think I was any good at this in the first place? It's those times that will separate the players from the fish. Anybody can win, but not everyone knows how to handle losing. So what do I want to accomplish with this blog? Improvement, knowledge, and fun. I hope through this that I can not only allow people learning the game to understand how to play the game, but also what the game is all about. I also want to use this for myself, to help force me to take and honest look at my game, and improve upon it. Think of whoever it is that is the best in the world at this time in your opinion, and if you were to ask them if they can get any better I guarantee he or she would tell you that they are still learning and always will be. I want to learn, and I want many others to learn from me and have as much love and respect for the game as I do. Hopefully in the process we can make a few pennies.

I'd also like for you to get to know me as a person. I want you to learn from me, but I also want you to know who you are learning from. Obviously by my opening I've been through a thing or?twenty, and I don't mind my readers knowing any of it. A lot of you have been through these things too, and I want you all to relate to me in ways that go beyond poker. Hopefully we can balance that line between educational and personal to create a solid communication that will improve life as well as poker. I will spare you all the details there, but there is a direct correlation between you poker table and things outside of it, and all of it can affect the other.

Hopefully this will be the first of many entries that I will be able to share, and hopefully I can ramble a little less in those. Anyone may feel free to contact me with any questions, thoughts, love, or hate that they wish. I'll do my best to respond to whatever I can. But for now it's last call and the ugly lights are coming on, so until next time thanks for letting me share and I'll pass....
