Is There a Right Way to Play Poker?
Posted at 04/08/2005 03:50:19 PM in General Discussions by The Greedy Gecko.
On the surface, poker appears simple enough to warrant a yes answer to this question. When you eliminate all the qualitative considerations in a poker game, it ultimately boils down to a game of long-run statistics. However, playing the mathematically correct way all the time does not guarantee you to be a profitable poker player. Also, if there was one strategically correct way to play, then everyone would learn this strategy and nobody would realize long-term success. Another indication that there is no single correct way to play is the quantity of books available on the topic. If there’s a correct way to play, then wouldn’t we need only one book?

Which Strategy is Correct? In order to be a successful poker play, you have to be able to employ a different strategy depending on the game type, level of stakes, number of opponents, quality of opponents, and numerous other qualitative considerations. In order to develop your poker skills, and your ability to adapt to circumstances, you will need to expose yourself to different circumstances and keep track of what works and what doesn’t over the long-term. Even then, there are no guarantees that you will succeed.

In order to arrive at a strategy that worked for me, I read every poker book available at my local bookstores (when I say EVERY book, I’m not exaggerating). Then I logged countless hours playing, taking note of what works and what doesn’t. Ultimately, I arrived at a style of play that works for me.
